Blurb
Shade has been kept in the dark for eight long years. Now he’s facing a world that terrifies him. A world that seems to hold no place for him.

When the authorities are unable to find a home for Shade, Penny, reluctantly accepts him into the secure school she manages, despite thinking it’s the wrong place for him. Penny fears for his safety among the other troubled children. In an attempt to forestall the disaster she predicts will happen she appoints one of them as his champion.

Dory, an engaging seventeen year old with mental health issues, is proud to be chosen as Shade’s champion and throws his heart and soul into the job. In doing so he is forced to face the thing he fears most – his own emotions.

An unexpected friendship begins to grow into something more, until a spiteful act tears them apart and leaves them broken.

When Dory falls ill, Shade is forced to face his demons and struggles to find the strength and courage he needs to fight for the right to love, and to be there for his champion when he needs him most.

“You’re sixteen. A year younger than me. I’m seventeen, but only just gone. One more year and I’ll get to leave. I don’t know where I’ll go, though.” He heard the nervousness creep into his voice and tried to swallow it. Shade didn’t need to have his worries on top of his own.
Shade didn’t seem to notice. He was thinking hard.
“Sixteen’s not very old, is it?”
“No, not very. Well, not at all really. You’re not a grown up yet. I don’t think I’ll ever be a grown up, but I guess you will. You weren’t put together wrong, just... broken a bit.”
Shade laughed. “Broken a lot.”
“Hmm. I don’t think so.”
“How would you know?”
“I can see it in your eyes. There have been broken people here before and there’s something scary in their eyes. Your eyes aren’t scary at all.”
“Really? They feel scary to me.”
“How can eyes feel scary? Oh, you’re teasing me.” Dorien had caught a certain twinkle, and it made him feel excited. Shade wasn’t so shut down after all. There was a nice person in there waiting to come out, Dorien was sure of it.
Shade’s smile faded. He sighed and closed his eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“I don’t know. I feel.... I don’t know.”
“Did that horrible doctor give you more meds?”
“Horrible?” Shade opened his eyes and blinked at him. He looked confused, but that humour was lurking in the shadows again.
“Oh yes. I had to go to a meeting to decide if I’m up to being your friend. My doctor was there and so was yours. They were almost fighting because yours is horrible and mine is nice. Penny got cross, too, and she told him that if he didn’t stick to the point she’d throw him out. Well, she didn’t exactly say that, but it was implied. Penny often does that, kind of not saying things, but you know what she means.”
“I have no idea what you just said.”
“Sorry, am I talking too fast again?”
“No, well... yes. I... I have trouble following. It’s....”
“Oh. That’s okay. I get like that sometimes when the doctors change my meds. Dr. Blake says the best thing to do is get up and walk it off. You should do that. Hey, I can show you around. No one told me we have to stay here.”
“I don’t know. I don’t feel so good. I want to just lie and—”
“But that would be boring for me.”
“You said it was okay to go to sleep.”
“Well, I didn’t really mean it, and anyway, I didn’t know then how much fun you are.” “I am?” He sounded so surprised Dorien had to smile.
“Yes, you are. Come on, get up. By the time you get to the end of the corridor you’ll be fine. Have you got a really fuzzy head? I hate that. It doesn’t happen much anymore, but I get it a lot after an episode or when they’re changing my meds. It will go away. Do you need me to help you?”
“I... think.... Dorien, I don’t this is a good idea.”
“Call me Dory. Come on, up you get. I’ll help you.”
“No, I....”
No matter how much Shade protested, Dorien was single-minded. He just knew Shade would be okay once he was on his feet.
Groaning but compliant, Shade allowed Dorien to haul him up to sit on the edge of the bed. He bowed his head, his hands resting on his knees. “Give me a minute.”
“What’s wrong?”
“I don’t feel right. I think I’m going to be sick.”
“No, you won’t. Once you start walking you’ll feel better.”
“Are you sure?” Shade looked up at him, his honeyed eyes wide and bright. Something inside Dorien went shivery.
“Yes. Give me your hands.”
Shade’s hands were cold but sweating. Dorien gripped them tightly and dragged Shade to his feet. Shade staggered forward and almost knocked Dorien over .
“Shit. Be careful. You’re bigger than me. You’ll break me.”
“Not bigger.”
“Nope, you’re definitely bigger. I’m a long string of nothing. Rich says that when he’s teasing me about how much I eat. I eat a lot but I never seem to put weight on. I think it’s because I do everything fast. I—are you alright? You’ve gone awfully pale.”
“No.” Shade mumbled something else, Dorien couldn’t hear.
“What did you say? Can’t you stand up properly now? You’re too heavy.”
Shade raised his head and met Dorien’s eyes. He opened his mouth to speak, then his eyes rolled and he collapsed, unconscious.

Meet The Author
Cheryl was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was 16, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.

Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews and cousin and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.

Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a re enactment group who travelled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.

It was here she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news, and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that still wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.

In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the valleys with her son and menagerie of three cats, a dog and a dragon. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close.

Immersed, as always, in the world of fantasy, she maintains a burning desire to share the stories and these days it’s in the form of books which all contain her spark and unique view on life, the universe and everything.

Strong hands grabbed Rayne’s waist and pulled him back into a tall, muscular chest. “You look so damn sexy. It makes me want to fuck you in front of everyone and show them who you belong to,” a husky voice whispered in his ear.
Rayne jumped, his heart thundering. It was Colin! He tried to turn, but the hands gripping him kept him in place. Looking up, Rayne gasped. Colin’s dark hair fell across his eyebrows. Jade-colored eyes were hot enough to scorch the Sahara desert. The steady beat from the music and Colin’s body leading his in a slow, provocative dance melted any resistance Rayne had.
He’d promised himself tonight was about fun. Why should he deny himself the pleasure of indulging in his secret fantasy? Monday would take care of itself, but tonight Rayne was going to follow the sexy CEO all the way to the end.
Losing himself in the music and Colin’s wandering hands, Rayne melted against the body behind him. Colin plastered himself to Rayne’s body, grinding his stiff cock against Rayne’s ass. Rayne shuddered and pushed back against Colin, enjoying the strong arms that embraced him. He’d never felt so sexy before. Colin was awakening feelings in him he’d never experienced before, and he wanted more.
Spinning around, Rayne looped his arms around Colin’s neck. The heat between them intensified, and the world melted away as green eyes locked with gray. Colin’s hands drifted down Rayne’s back and squeezed his ass. Rayne shuddered and pressed back. Licking his lips, Rayne stood on tiptoe and was met with firm succulent lips. Colin’s tongue traced Rayne’s mouth before sweeping inside. Rayne moaned, trying to climb into the man’s skin.
Colin broke the kiss and nibbled down to Rayne’s ear. “Follow me,” temptation whispered. Dazed, Rayne nodded and followed the sexy man.

Jordan's Second Chance 5.1

Welcome to another addition to Wednesday's Briefs! For those new to the group, each Wednesday authors post a flash fiction using either a pictorial or verbal prompt. This week, I've chosen to use the verbal prompt, "You have only two choices here. Choose wisely."

This week we continue with Jordan's Second Chance. Jordan has decided to investigate the dangers surrounding Wynter. Will Jordan finally get the answers he is searching for, or will danger find him where he least expects it? I hope you enjoy this latest installment.

Happy reading,

TC

Jordan’s Second Chance 5.1

“I’m not sure if this is a good idea. Whoever is in that car could see us coming,” Jordan muttered, slowly creeping toward the dark-colored sedan.
“We want to catch this bastard by surprise, that’s why we decided to wait until dark and pretended we were leaving,” Jonas replied.
“Since it’s your plan, you’re going back for the car.”
Jonas snorted. “Quit being a sourpuss, Wynter won’t stay mad at you forever.”
“That’s easy for you to say, you weren’t the one dodging shoe missiles,” Jordan growled, remembering the shock he’d felt when Wynter had thrown the first shoe when Jordan had forbidden him to come with them. Wynter had been livid when he learned he wasn’t going to be a part of their little reconnaissance team. Jordan hoped this time apart helped Wynter calm down. He had no desire to dodge shoes for the rest of the night.
“What the hell? It’s empty,” Jonas muttered peering into the car.
Jordan shook his head, he needed to get his head back in the game. “Shit, do you think he saw us coming and abandoned the car?” Jordan asked.
Jonas shook his head. “It’s possible, but I don’t think so,” Jonas replied, reaching for the door handle.
“Wait! What are you doing? What if there’s an alarm?” Jordan tried to keep his voice low. What was Jonas thinking?
Jonas just grinned over the hood of the car at him and opened the passenger door. Jordan rolled his eyes and opened the driver’s side door in time to see Jonas pick up a stack of what looked to be photos.
“What the hell is this?” Jordan asked, catching a glimpse of one photo. The photo was of him and Wynter, taken on the day they first met at the park.
“Whoever this is, they’ve been watching you for a while.”
Jonas handed over the other pictures. The majority of the pictures were of Jordan, but a couple of the shots were of Wynter and his son Lucas. “Do you think it was Jason Fox?” Jordan asked, referring to the man who was responsible for Wynter’s parents’ deaths.
“That’s who I’m leaning toward, but we still have the mystery woman out there. We still don’t know her identity,” Jonas said, searching the dashboard and pulling up the arm rest, both compartments were empty.
“Damn it! This is like a bad crime drama. Who the hell seriously has two completely different people trying to kill them?”
Jonas arched an eyebrow and shot a pointed look at Jordan. Chuckling, Jordan shook his head and got out of the car. “Let’s head back.”
****
Jordan cautiously stepped through the front door, keeping an eye out for any flying tennis shoes. He started to breathe a sigh of relief, until he spotted Wynter standing in the family room, his arms crossed over his chest and foot tapping impatiently.
“Hey babe, what’s up?” Jordan asked, hoping in vain that the small man wasn’t still in a snit.
“Don’t, ‘hey babe’ me! I can’t believe you actually left me here like I’m a child!”
“I’m going to check on Nana,” Jonas said, heading toward the kitchen.
Jordan nodded and turned his attention back toward Wynter. “You’re safe here Wynter. Someone is trying to kill you, there is no way I’m going to put your life in danger.”
“You’re in just as much danger as I am. Jordan, I won’t…” Wynter trailed off, his face paling.
Jordan spun around, searching. The sudden fear emanating from Wynter triggering his protective instincts. Jordan’s jaw dropped in shock when he spotted the slender red-headed woman standing in the front door with a gun in her hand.
“It can’t be,” Jordan whispered. He knew this woman.
“You have only two choices here. Choose wisely.”
To be continued…
